Fifty-plus years of conflict and military presence in Afghanistan has ingrained itself into the country’s textile culture and heritage known as "war rugs".  Representing a mash-up of centuries-old motifs and modern symbols of war that include AK-47 assault rifles, helicopters, and artillery tanks, these complex, visually stunning handiworks are woven by Afghan women and were originally marketed to visiting troops.  When the Soviets invaded Afghanistan in 1979, Afghan weavers found that combat-inspired rugs were marketable to the Russian military, and later on (beginning in 2001) to American troops as well.  

The pants we think of today as PJs stem from a centuries-old tradition. The word "pajama" has its origin in Hindi, translating as "garment for the legs" and were originally loose trousers with a simple cord to tie them. Pajama tops were influenced by European bed shirts from the 1900's traditional night-time attire.  Over time, the transition to modern pajamas during the 20th century made the flannel fabric variety increasingly popular in the cold weather season.  Eventually, the look became popular with both sexes, even sharing the same matching top and bottom sets between couples!
